Gearset, a rapidly growing tech company, sought a new home within Cambridge Science Park to support its expanding team and evolving ways of working. The brief centred on creating a future-ready environment with sustainability at its core, prioritising the reuse of existing elements wherever possible. Rather than defining a radical departure from their existing workspace, the ambition was to create a natural evolution one that would elevate the employee experience, champion wellbeing, and reflect Gearset’s playful, people-first culture.
At the heart of the design is a large communal tea point, positioned strategically as the social anchor of the workplace. Acting as a hub for culture, connection, and collaboration, this area provides a flexible destination for informal meetings, casual catch-ups, and moments of respite throughout the day. Its central location helps foster a sense of togetherness across the organisation, ensuring the space supports both structured teamwork and spontaneous interaction.
The overall environment balances vibrant, collaborative zones with quieter, private areas to suit a range of working styles. Multiple meeting rooms were designed with flexibility in mind, supporting everything from daily stand-ups to client presentations. New phone booths have been integrated throughout to offer places for focused work and confidential conversations, extending the functionality of the space and providing staff with a greater sense of autonomy and choice in how they work.
Gearset’s fun and playful brand identity is celebrated throughout the workspace. Bold colours, striking messaging, and creative detailing bring energy and personality to the interior, ensuring the environment feels unmistakably “Gearset.” These moments of visual interest help reinforce the company’s culture and values, creating a workplace that employees feel proud to call their own.
Biophilia plays a central role in enhancing wellbeing, with abundant planting and natural textures introduced to soften the space and create a calming, uplifting atmosphere. These elements not only improve air quality but also contribute to a more restorative and engaging work environment. Sustainability was a key driver from the outset, with a strong focus on repurposing existing materials and making responsible design decisions at every stage. This approach aligns with both Gearset’s ethos and broader environmental ambitions within Cambridge Science Park, resulting in a workspace that is as conscientious as it is contemporary.
The final result is a dynamic, flexible, and brand-led workplace that supports future growth while remaining deeply connected to Gearset’s identity. Designed to empower their people and strengthen culture, the new office delivers a welcoming and sustainable environment where teams can thrive today and well into the future.
