Beyond the Finish: How Materials Shape the Workplace

Too often, materiality in workplace design is seen as a finishing touch, a layer once the bigger spatial decisions have been settled. Our approach is different. We treat materiality as a driver of experience, shaping how a space feels, sounds, ages and supports the people who work within it from the very first decision onward.

This shift reshapes our entire process. Instead of saving finishes for the final stage, we allow texture, weight, warmth, and performance to influence our designs from the outset. Every material earns its place by what it adds to the experience, not just how it appears once everything is in place.

Why Materiality Shapes the Workplace

The materials in an office affect:

  • Employee comfort: Surfaces that feel right reduce friction in everyday movement.

  • Productivity: Well-considered environments help people focus and settle.

  • Acoustics: Soft, absorptive materials tame noise and protect concentration.

  • Wellbeing: Natural finishes and tactile variety make spaces feel human.

  • Brand perception: Materials communicate values before anyone speaks.

  • Durability and maintenance: The right choice lasts, ages well, and costs less to keep.

Doing Things Differently: Urban-Mined Terrazzo

We don't produce cookie-cutter designs, and a recent luxury washroom project proves it. Rather than demolishing the existing terrazzo flooring and resigning it to landfill, we saw value where others saw waste.

Here's how the urban mining process worked:

  1. Collect: We removed the existing terrazzo and gathered stone waste from the site.

  2. Crush: That waste was processed into high-quality aggregates.

  3. Recycle: Those aggregates were reborn as new premium terrazzo flooring and wall tiles for the same scheme.

The result is a washroom that carries genuine history in its surfaces. The new terrazzo flooring holds the prestige and permanence of stone, while the process itself reduces waste and gives the material a second, more beautiful life.

A Smarter Way to Specify

Materiality is where comfort, acoustics, wellbeing, and brand identity meet. When we select materials with intent, and reuse where possible, we create workplaces

that is more appealing to the eye, last longer and makes more intelligent use of resources.
