Designing for the Multi-Generational Workforce

Workplaces bring together an unprecedented mix of talent. Baby Boomers who may value face-to-face interactions and deep industry experience with Gen Xers seeking steady work-life balance and operational efficiency. While Millennials who may thrive on flexibility and team-based collaboration are sitting side by side with Gen Z digital natives who expect seamless, fast-paced tech integration from day one.
The age gap in the modern commercial office has never been wider.
With the UK state pension age officially rising to 67 in 2026, employees are staying in their careers much longer than before. At the same time, new talent continues to
pour out of education and apprenticeships at 18. By 2030, Millennials and Gen Z are projected to make up a massive 74% of the global workforce*. This will mean workplaces will have people separated by half a century working side by side. This incredible diversity brings unique expectations, and it also presents distinct challenges for businesses that want to support a wide variety of working styles.
The pressure is on to ensure all employees, regardless of their age or background, feel completely valued and highly productive.
Not Making Assumptions
It’s important not to make assumptions about employee needs based on age, however. We shouldn’t presume someone who is 65 isn’t tech-savvy, just as we shouldn’t assume someone who is 25 automatically is. Likewise, not every young employee will thrive in an open-plan, collaborative environment…. workplace needs and preferences are unique to the individual, not just their generation.
Walking the Walk at GTA Interior
At GTA, we don’t just talk about designing beautiful, inclusive workplaces for our clients, we walk the walk ourselves. Our London office is a thriving multi-generational workplace. From our youngest junior designers to our most experienced senior directors, we see firsthand the broad spectrum of needs our teams have.
Because our own team spans decades, we are deeply aware of the generations we cater to. We understand that a rigid, one-size-fits-all approach simply falls flat. Instead, we use our lived experience to fuel our design strategies, creating spaces that actually work for the people using them.
United by Employee Ownership
What unites our team is how we're structured. GTA is an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). No matter what age our team is, or what stage of their career they've reached, the EOT is a vehicle for everyone to be unified, pull in the same direction and gives every team member real ownership.
Everyone knows their input is meaningful, that they have a say, and that they contribute directly to the success of the business. Together we feel the rewards. That sense of shared purpose cuts across every generation in our business.
The EOT is also our USP. Because we're unified and invested as one, we're driven to push the business forward and deliver the best possible service to our clients. Our clients and partners see this first-hand in the way we work. The diverse range of experience, knowledge, and skill across our team means we always have our finger on the pulse, blending fresh thinking with deep expertise on every project.

Design Solutions That Bridge the Gap
Our design solutions respond directly to these varying generational needs. We focus on creating environments that adapt to the user, rather than forcing the user to adapt to the environment.
Flexible Workspaces: This means incorporating highly adaptable areas that support both deep, heads-down work and spontaneous team collaboration. This allows Gen X to find the focus they need while giving Millennials the collaborative energy they crave.
Thoughtful Technology Integration: Tech should empower your team, not frustrate them. We design spaces with technology that is accessible to all. This approach empowers tech-savvy team members to plug in instantly, while comfortably supporting other team members who might be adjusting to new digital tools.
Social Zones and Quiet Rooms: A well-designed office respects different boundaries. We build vibrant social zones for connection, alongside dedicated quiet rooms. This perfectly balances some Boomers’ need for privacy with younger generations’ desire to socialise and connect throughout the day.
